How Marketing & Social Work Became My Story

During high school, I stumbled upon the world of “Mad Men” and was immediately captivated by the glamorous allure of a profession in advertising. I found myself enamored by the wit and sophistication of the advertising moguls depicted, as well as their uncanny grasp of human desires and motivations. Little did I know this fascination would eventually lead me into the realm of social work – a connection I couldn’t quite appreciate at the time. Rather, I pursued a degree in advertising, graduating a semester early to embark on the journey I hoped would bring my Don Draper-esque goals to fruition. Looking back, I’m grateful for my youthful oversight, as my foundation in advertising provided me with knowledge and experiences that now form the cornerstone of my professional journey, blending strategic acumen with intuitive insight.

After immersing myself in the marketing field for a couple of years, I began seeking fulfillment outside the confines of my career, and discovered my passion for supporting others through mentoring interns and volunteering with young girls. This propelled me to pursue my Master of Social Work, which I completed in May 2021.

The principles, theories, and values I delved into during my studies resonated profoundly with my personal ethos, guiding me toward opportunities – professional and otherwise – that embody these philosophies. I gravitate toward populations that continue to be pushed to the margins of society – like the juvenile offenders I’ve intervened with, the young grievers I’ve held space for as a support group coordinator, and the members of my community who experience discrimination as a result of their identities. Fueled by a steadfast dedication to justice, accountability, and candor, I’m driven to merge my diverse skill sets to deliver the most authentic, compassionate, and informed work possible.

In essence, the fusion of my experiences in marketing and social work isn’t a coincidence; it’s a deliberate convergence, rooted in a fervent desire to make a meaningful impact by understanding human behavior and addressing societal challenges with empathy and innovation.
